Role: Archaeological Contractor
Ballymakaily, Co. Dublin
Client: Burr Computer Environments Inc.
Project Scope
AMS have been appointed Archaeological Consultants by Burr Computer Environments Inc for the proposed development of a data centre and ancillary infrastructure, including an ESB substation, car parking, internal site access and drainage works at Grange Business Park, Co. Dublin.
Consideration Factors
A previous geophysical survey of the site identified a large enclosure with associated field system ditches as well as peripheral areas of archaeological activity across this 23ha development site.
Actions Taken
- AMS developed a testing strategy and undertook targeted test trenching at the site to assess the archaeological risk of the development;
- This was followed by a 4-month archaeological excavation of the enclosure and associated field system in 2019. This involved the excavation of a 2-phased enclosure c.70m in overall diameter. There was also evidence for internal occupation, in the form of buildings and other structural remains;
- Analysis of the excavation results is ongoing and a selection of samples from key features and contexts will be submitted for radiocarbon dating and specialist analysis.
